RCMP have charged four people with second degree murder and criminal negligence causing death in the May 2011 death of 27-year-old Christian Bird.

The Ahtahkakoop First Nation man was found clinging to a piece of ice in Sandy Lake, about 50 feet from shore. Officers entered the water and pulled Bird to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Three of the four persons charged in Bird’s death were youth at the time of the offence. Their names cannot be released.

The fourth person charged is 19-year-old Dannie Justin Knife of Prince Albert.
