The man who admitted to stealing millions of dollars from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Hugo Gallegos was sentenced in Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench Wednesday after pleading guilty last month to charges of theft and fraud.

Gallegos was the First Nations accountant from 2009 until he was charged in 2013. Court heard he wrote cheques to himself totalling $5.8 million.

The Crown said he spent the money on a lavish lifestyle. He spent $700 on socks on one occasion.

Investigators have so far recovered about $720,000 of the $5.8 million. Gallegos was ordered to pay back the remainder of the money to Whitecap Dakota, in addition to the five-year jail sentence.
