A former Huskies hockey player battling cancer has died.

Cody Smuk passed away early Thursday morning in hospital in Saskatoon, according to his fiancée Stephanie Vause.  The couple got engaged late last year.

Smuk, 26, played in the Western Hockey League before joining the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in 2010.  He was diagnosed with testicular cancer last summer. The diagnosis came just four days after he played a game in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships.

The cancer had since moved to his lungs.

Smuk flew to Germany in April for treatment and returned to Saskatoon earlier this month.
