A former Saskatchewan junior football player has been granted bail while he appeals his conviction and sentence on weapons and drug offences.

Adrian Charles, who used to play for the Saskatoon Hilltops of the Prairie Football Conference, was sentenced last month to three years in prison for possessing a prohibited weapon and a controlled substance.

He was also found guilty of being in a vehicle where he knew a firearm was present.

Charles, who is 28, is appealing on the grounds that the trial judge made several errors.

Saskatchewan Appeal Court Justice Peter Whitmore says Charles has displayed good behaviour since he was first arrested, has a job and has strong family support in Ontario.

The judge granted him bail on a $2,500 surety and with a number of conditions.
