A man is in Saskatoon police custody on suspicion of impaired driving after a five-vehicle crash sent five people to hospital.

Police were called to the intersection of 22nd Street and Avenue P just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday. A vehicle driven by a man investigators believe was impaired slammed into the back of another vehicle stopped at a red light, police said in a media release. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision.

A total of five vehicles were involved in the crash. The vehicle driven by the suspected impaired driver flipped onto its roof while three people became pinned in the vehicle that was first struck.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue the trapped occupants.

None of the injuries are considered life-threatening, according to police.

The man in custody is now part of an investigation into impaired driving causing bodily harm, police said.
