Firefighters carrying several pet cages out of a Saskatoon home was the scene Wednesday following reports of a house fire in the city’s River Heights neighbourhood.

Crews were called to 747 Coppermine Crescent just after noon, according to a fire department media release. Three adolescent children inside the home reported the fire to 911.

The kids were outside the home when crews arrived. Firefighters first ensured no other occupants were in the house before extinguishing a small fire in one of the bedrooms.

Crews were also required to ventilate smoke from the home and carry out several cages containing two hamsters and three guinea pigs.

An investigator has since determined the cause of the fire to be an unattended heat gun used for crafts, the fire department said.

Damage is estimated at $10,000. No one was injured during the incident.
