A grass fire spanning 30 acres south of Saskatoon posed no risk to nearby homes, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

Fire crews were called Saturday to a field just off Highway 11 between Grasswood Road and the city’s Stonebridge neighbourhood around 1:20 p.m. The fire spanned about five acres when crews arrived and spread across 30 acres before flames were extinguished around 4 p.m., Battalion Chief David Nahachewsky said.

“It’s so swampy and wet here that we won’t be able to drive a lot of our apparatuses into where they need to be. We’ll just basically let it burn towards us,” Nahachewsky said while on scene, referring to crews set up south of the flames.

Railway tracks divided the blaze from nearby Stonebridge homes. Houses were in no danger of burning, according to Nahachewsky.

Highway 11, dirt roads and sloughs limited the fire’s range.

“We’re just going to reinforce those barriers,” said Nahachewsky before the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the blaze will remain unknown, he said.

No infrastructure was damaged and no one was injured.

Nahachewsky said the blaze marked the start of grass-fire season and warned people to be mindful of where they toss out their cigarettes.
