Saskatoon’s Catholic and public school boards are warning high school students and parents about the dangers of fentanyl.

A letter sent to parents of more than 14,000 students late last week states the school divisions are working closely with police and the Saskatoon Health Region after noticing a significant increase in opioid use — specifically among youth — in the city.

“This has resulted in overdose deaths and near misses,” the letter reads. “It is affecting youth in all neighbourhoods within Saskatoon and area.”

The letter is the first of its kind sent out in Saskatoon and lists some indicators of opioid use as part of the divisions’ efforts to prevent an overdose.

Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and up to 50 times stronger than heroin -- making it potentially deadly in very small doses.
