Saskatoon police have arrested and charged a 39-year-old woman with extortion, unlawful confinement and uttering threats.

Police say officers received a report Saturday afternoon from another woman stating she received a text message demanding money for the safe release of a family member.

The suspect was eventually arrested on the 600 block of 20th Street West and a victim was found, according to police. The victim had been assaulted but did not suffer serious injuries.

The 39-year-old has since been charged with two counts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm, two counts of extortion, unlawful confinement and breach of undertaking.
