Wesley John Veit has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Heidi Veit.

He was taken into custody at a home in the RM of Buffalo around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday without incident, according to RCMP.

A Wilkie resident told CTV News that he was the estranged husband of the victim.

Heidi Veit was a mother of two boys and worked as an education assistant at McLurg School.

Wilkie Mayor David Ziegler described her as kind and outgoing. He said Veit was involved in the community and even spent some time working in the town office.

Ziegler said. “She's had a few jobs; well liked in the community; involved in a lot of things.”

New details are emerging about the investigation into her death. Police were called to an incident on Monday, and according to residents, they’ve been in the area ever since.

Investigators were combing through a rural property about five kilometers northeast of Wilkie. Barricades blocked off traffic from heading to the area, and the RCMP warned residents to stay away from the scene for safety reasons.

A map from the local rural municipality office shows the land where investigators are working is listed under Wes and Heidi Veit.

A court date for Wesley Veit has not yet been set.
