Two Saskatoon prison inmates who escaped while on work detail have been arrested, RCMP say.

Mounties were called at 9 a.m. Thursday after two Saskatoon Correctional Centre inmates on a reduced-custody work assignment in Martensville reportedly walked away from the work location.

Heavily armed officers as well as an armoured police vehicle were called in to assist the search. RCMP closed off several roads north of Saskatoon — near Highway 11 and Wanuskewin Road in the Rural Municipality of Corman Park— as they looked for the pair.

One of the inmates, a 25-year-old man, was taken into custody just before noon. The other, also 25, was arrested just before 5:30 p.m.

Both were taken into custody in Corman Park and charged with escaping, RCMP said in a media release.

Both will appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday.
