A driver caught on the ice at a Saskatchewan ferry crossing was saved with just seconds to spare before her SUV completely dropped into the water.

Warman Fire Rescue’s deputy fire chief said the driver was crossing an ice road on the South Saskatchewan River at the Clarkboro ferry crossing — located north of Saskatoon, between Warman and Aberdeen — when her vehicle started to fall through the ice.

She tried dialing 911 but her phone cut out. With water reaching up to the windows, she was forced to roll down her window and climb to the roof of the vehicle.

She tried 911 again — this time reaching emergency crews. Rescuers arrived and performed a rope rescue onto the ice. They managed to reach the woman just as the SUV completely disappeared below the water surface.
