A 21-year-old man assaulted and left lying unconscious on a downtown Saskatoon street is recovering in hospital.

Police were called Saturday around 1:30 a.m. to the 200 block of 2nd Avenue South after reports a man was being assaulted on the street. Officers located the victim — a Regina man — unconscious upon their arrival. He was taken to hospital where he was in stable condition early Saturday afternoon.

A 23-year-old man is facing an aggravated assault charge in relation to the incident. He is set to appear before a Justice of the Peace Saturday evening.

The assault began inside a downtown business before moving to the street, police said. The report was at least the second time officers were called to the business that night.

Police said in a media release that shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday an unknown male suspect approached several people standing in front of the business and sprayed them with what officers believe was bear spray.

Several people were treated at the scene by emergency personnel. The suspect fled.

Police do not believe the two incidents are related.
