A new flag is flying high in downtown Saskatoon.

Divas Nightclub raised what its manager Aaron Paetsch says is one of the largest Pride flags in North America on Thursday morning, to kick off Pride month in Saskatchewan. The flag is nearly 1,000 square feet.

The flag not only celebrates Saskatoon Pride, but also serves as a reminder people are still fighting for equal rights, Paetsch said, pointing to last year’s mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando and recent reports gay men in Russia’s Chechnya republic had been tortured and killed by police.

“I hope that they see it as a sign of support, a show of support to the people who were harmed and killed at Pulse, the concentration camps in Russia, basically anywhere around the world where you are bullied or hurt for being who you are,” he said.

The flag will be up for all of June.

Saskatoon’s Pride parade is set for June 24. Several Pride events are planned throughout the month.
