The Saskatoon Health Region has hired a new president and CEO.

Dan Florizone, Saskatchewan’s current deputy education minister and deputy minister responsible for Lean, was announced as the new leader Thursday.

He will replace current president and CEO Maura Davies, who the region announced last month was asked to step down.

Florizone’s knowledge of Lean — a multi-million dollar program harshly criticized by the NDP and intended to cut costs and improve efficiencies within Saskatchewan’s health-care system— was central to his hiring, according to Jim Rhode, the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority’s board chair.

“We know with Mr. Florizone’s leadership through Patient First and his commitment to Lean, he will be dedicated to the system-wide transformation that is taking place within health care across our province,” Rhode said in a media release.

Davies is set to leave her position Dec. 1. Florizone will take over Jan. 5.

Jackie Mann, vice-president of integrated health services, will serve as interim president and CEO from Dec. 1 to Jan. 4.
