Saskatoon’s electric utility says it will continue a program to replace all of its power meters with new smart meters.

The news comes after the provincial government ordered SaskPower on Wednesday to halt its smart-meter installation program and remove any of the meters already installed in the wake of eight fires related to the meters.

Saskatoon Light and Power says it uses a different brand of smart meters than SaskPower and has not experienced problems with those meters since it began the replacement program in 2008.

Smart meters deliver usage readings to the utility wirelessly.

The Saskatoon utility has already replaced more than half of the meters of its approximately 60,000 customers. The program is expected to be complete by 2017.

Saskatoon residents are served by either Saskatoon Light and Power or SaskPower, depending upon the location of their home.
