Massive housing and commercial development is planned for the east sector of Saskatoon. In order to get ready for the projects, the City of Saskatoon brought in a hefty machine from Wisconsin to dig a tunnel over a kilometer long.

The 1.5 kilometer tunnel will connect the city’s main sewer system with a set of pipes yet to be laid in the new development.

With a price-tag of $38 million, the project’s focus is on the future growth of Saskatoon. The development is estimated to hold 80,000 residence once it’s complete, said the city’s special project manager, Dan Willems.

“We’re just getting ready to start our project and it should be completed by July of next year,” Willems said.

The pipes under construction will run under the east boulevard of Mcormand Drive between Attridge Drive and Highway 5.
