A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the death of a 21-year-old man on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation.

The victim has been identified by RCMP as Tyrone Jacob Knife from the Ahtahkakoop First Nation. RCMP say he was found just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Shellbrook RCMP responded to a complaint of an injured and unresponsive male on a trail leading to several homes on the reserve.

Knife was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. EMS and STARS air ambulance responded to the scene. Knife was transported by EMS, but was pronounced deceased before STARS could transport him to hospital.

During initial investigation 19-year-old Dakota Hilliard John Knife was arrested by RCMP at a nearby residence in an unrelated situation. But, upon further investigation, RCMP identified him as a suspect in the murder.

RCMP say the victim and suspect were related.

Dakota Hilliard John Knife is charged with first-degree murder, using a firearm while committing first-degree murder, aggravated assault, assault and possession of a prohibited firearm.

He made his first court appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Thursday morning. He’s scheduled to appear in court again in October.

The investigation is still underway and an autopsy will take place in Saskatoon on Friday.
