An attempted murder charge against a Red Earth First Nation man has been elevated to a charge of second-degree murder following the death of a 22-year-old woman in hospital, RCMP say.

Mounties say Alyssa Nawakayas died in hospital Friday.

The 23-year-old man charged in her death was arrested April 25 on attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapon possession, and breach of probation offences. The attempted murder charge was upgraded to a second-degree murder charge after Nawakayas’ death, according to police.

Nawakayas was the victim in an April 24 assault. RCMP say officers were called to the Red Earth First Nation, located about 225 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert in the Carrot River area, early in the morning.

A woman suffering from life-threatening injuries was found outside a home in the community. She was taken to a hospital in Nipawin before being airlifted to Saskatoon.

She and the accused were known to each other, according to RCMP. Nawakayas was also from the First Nation.
