Monday marked day one of 130 days of construction on the Diefenbaker Bridge in Prince Albert, and it caused a bit of a traffic delay.

A video captured by one local driver heading south on Highway 2 into the city shows just how long the backup was.

The city is replacing the concrete splash guards and the metal hand rails on the bridge. The work is expected to last until September.

Only one lane will be closed at a time and motorists are reminded to use caution and to zipper merge, meaning drivers should use both lanes until reaching the point of merge, then alternate into the open lane.

Research shows zipper merges can reduce the overall length of traffic back up by as much as 40 per cent.
