A 14-year-old boy is facing arson and break-and-enter charges in connection to a massive fire at an auto salvage yard in Saskatoon last week.

He was one of five boys who were detained for questioning after flames broke out at the Avenue P South and 14th Street West wrecking yard on April 19, according to police.

About 25 firefighters, and eight fire engines, were called to the blaze.

More than 1,000 vehicles were in the compound, and fire crews needed several hours to control the flames, the Saskatoon Fire Department said.

More charges are expected to be laid in the case, a police spokesperson told CTV News. She was unable to say if the additional charges would be laid against the 14-year-old accused or other suspects.

The five boys who were detained were between eight and 14 years old.

The owner of the auto yard estimated the damaged inventory was valued at about $250,000, according to the fire department.
