A 15-year-old boy with autism was found Friday night just north of Saskatoon 16 hours after he went missing.

Austin Carter was last seen at 7 a.m. Friday leaving his home on the 10 block of Lindsay Drive in Saskatoon’s Greystone Heights neighbourhood.

He had just recently begun taking the bus to school on his own, according to police.

Police alerted media and the public of Carter’s disappearance just before 2 p.m. Members of the Saskatoon Public Safety Unit alongside volunteers with Saskatoon Search and Rescue assisted in searching for the five-foot-one, 110-pound Carter.

He was found north of the city near Wanuskewin Heritage Park shortly before 11:30 p.m. after he was spotted by a citizen who alerted police.

Police said Carter made his way to the area on foot.

He was checked at the scene by paramedics as a precaution before he was returned to his family, who were also on scene. He may have suffered mild hypothermia, according to police.
