REGINA - Saskatchewan's auditor says the province needs to do more to ensure people on parole don't commit new crimes.

Provincial Auditor Bonnie Lysyk says the Ministry of Corrections isn't following its own rules when it comes to how often parole officers meet with offenders in the community.

Lysyk says a high percentage of offenders do not meet often enough with authorities, and the ministry isn't doing risk assessments on parolees quickly enough.

In the past 10 years she says about half of sentenced offenders in Saskatchewan get arrested for new crimes.

The report also cites the Prairie North Regional Health Authority for not ensuring that physicians are qualified to practise in hospitals.

She says while there is no evidence anyone has been harmed, the region needs to do more to help ensure patient care and safety.
