A man armed with a gun who barricaded himself inside a Saskatoon home for three hours Friday is in police custody.

Officers were called to a home on the 300 block of Coppermine Crescent in the city’s River Heights neighbourhood around 7 p.m. Friday. An assault was reported to have taken place in the residence.

A woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said, while a man who officers were informed was armed with a rifle remained inside the home.

Several police cruisers blocked off the area and numerous heavily armed officers were present. Crisis negotiators, an Explosives Disposal Unit robot, and an armoured Tactical Support Unit vehicle were also on scene.

Several gun shots could be heard throughout the standoff.

The man walked out of the house around 10 p.m. and was arrested. He did not have a weapon when he left the home, according to police.

More information is expected to be released Saturday.
